Austin Woman Recounts One-Degree Of Separation From Death At Local Women's Safety Conference
Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) August 27, 2008 -- In 2006, Amy C. Baker received a gunshot wound only centimeters away from her heart. Her upscale Austin neighborhood was one of the last places one would expect a walk-by car theft attempt and shooting in broad daylight. Baker will tell of her near fatal encounter to Fort Worth-area women attending the 5th Annual Women's Personal Safety Conference & Expo. The free and open event will be held at The Fort Worth Botanical Gardens Conservatory, Saturday, September 6, 2008 from 8:30am - 2:30pm.
"You're Worth Fighting For" is the title of Baker's keynote address, which she will deliver at 1 PM. The women's safety event is sponsored by former Ft. Worth Policewoman Elsie Allen and Sisters. S.O.S. (Supernaturally Overcoming Situations), the faith-based non-profit organization Allen founded.
"A one-degree difference, and I might not be here," Baker told an Austin TV news reporter following the incident in December 2006. "In the supernatural, divine order of things, I think an angel carried the bullet through my body."
Baker, also an inspirational author of two books, continued, "I had a hole next to my heart that's going to heal, but there's a hurting man out there. He still has a hole in his heart that has led him to a life of crime. I hope that heals."
In addition to Baker, Allen has assembled a complete safety program that includes workshops and talks on self defense, relationships, legal issues, finances and much more. Nero Foster & Communion are special music guests, and Christian Comedienne Phyllis Muznem will perform her stand-up routine, "A Merry Heart Will Do You Good."
"We are coming alongside and coaching women that might be in terrible situations, but want to run their race and finish well," Allen said, who will serve as conference emcee. "By God's grace, we can all finish and reach out to tell our story and hopefully help another sister."
In 2004, Allen, who is also survivor of domestic violence, began Sisters S.O.S at a time when she was heartbroken by the increase of violent crimes and vicious attacks on women and girls in her community and throughout the U.S. Most recently in 2007, Governor Rick Perry appointed Allen to the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. Allen's contribution to her local community won her "Woman of the Year" Award given by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1989 and a prestigious nomination as "Outstanding Woman of the Year" in 1993.
Allen concluded, "Personal safety and security is not just avoiding danger and surviving violent attacks; it's about making responsible and sometimes hard choices. Those choices may not lead to prince charming or lots of money in the bank--but they also won't lead to a life of regrets and disappointments."
The mission of Sisters S.O.S. is to provide women with biblically-based information and tools to enjoy a safe and secure life. For additional information, visit www.Sisterssos.com.
